High-deductible Plan G
Plan G's coverage, with a deductible in exchange for a lower premium.
High-deductible Plan G works like regular Plan G once you've met a yearly deductible of $2,950 in 2026. Until then, you pay Medicare's cost sharing yourself. The premium is usually much lower than standard Plan G's.
How the deductible works
The deductible covers the costs Plan G would otherwise pay, such as the Part A deductible and Part B coinsurance, plus the Part B deductible. Once your out-of-pocket costs for Medicare-covered services reach $2,950 in a year, the plan pays like Plan G for the rest of the year. The deductible is set by Medicare and can change each year.
Who it can fit
- People who are healthy now and want protection against a bad year rather than coverage for routine costs.
- People with savings to cover the deductible if needed.
- People who want Original Medicare's freedom to use any provider at a lower premium than standard Plan G.
What to weigh
Compare the premium savings over a year with the deductible. If the savings are close to the deductible, standard Plan G may be the better deal. And remember that switching to standard Plan G later may require medical underwriting in most states.
Common questions
