The questions worth asking before you buy

They work for any policy, and they're all reasonable to ask.

3 min read

Insurance is sold on what it covers. The things that determine whether it works for you are mostly in what it doesn't, and those don't lead the conversation.

None of these questions are awkward, and anyone selling you a policy should answer all of them without hesitation.

About the coverage

  • What exactly is excluded?
  • Is there a waiting period, and what is paid during it?
  • What would cause a claim to be denied?
  • Are there limits within the policy as well as an overall limit?

About the price

  • Is the premium level, or can it increase?
  • What causes it to increase?
  • Is this quote based on a confirmed assessment, or an assumed rating?
  • What happens if I miss a payment?

About the claim

  • Who do I contact, and how?
  • What documentation is needed?
  • How long does reimbursement typically take?
  • Is pre-authorisation required for anything?

About the person selling it

  • Are you licensed, and what's your licence number?
  • Are you representing one insurer or several?
  • How are you compensated?
  • Can you put the key terms in writing?

The meta-question

"What would make this policy the wrong choice for me?" A good professional will answer it. Someone who can't think of a single scenario where their product doesn't fit is selling, not advising.
