Medigap Plan G explained
The broadest plan most new enrollees can buy.
Plan G is the most comprehensive Medigap plan available to people who became eligible for Medicare in 2020 or later. Once you've paid the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), Plan G pays the rest of your Medicare-covered cost sharing.
What Plan G covers
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs, plus 365 extra hospital days.
- The Part A deductible ($1,736 per benefit period in 2026).
- Part B coinsurance and copayments.
- Part B excess charges.
- First 3 pints of blood.
- Hospice and skilled nursing facility coinsurance.
- 80% of foreign travel emergency care, up to plan limits.
What you still pay
The Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), your Part B premium, the Plan G premium, and your Part D plan costs. Services Medicare doesn't cover, such as routine dental, aren't covered either.
Why excess charges matter
Doctors who don't accept Medicare assignment can charge up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount. Plan G, and Plan F, are the only plans that pay these excess charges. Some states ban or limit excess charges, which makes this benefit less valuable there.
Comparing Plan G policies
- Premium now, and the company's history of rate increases.
- Pricing method: community-rated, issue-age or attained-age.
- Household or other discounts the company may offer.
- Whether a high-deductible version fits your budget and savings better.
Common questions
Almost. Plan F also pays the Part B deductible. Plan G doesn't, which is why Plan G is still sold to new enrollees and Plan F isn't.
No. You'd need a separate Part D drug plan.
