Medicare when your spouse is younger
Medicare has no family coverage. Plan for your spouse separately.
Medicare is individual coverage. When you go on Medicare, your younger spouse doesn't come with you, and if they were on your employer plan, they'll need a plan of their own when yours ends.
Options for your spouse
- Their own employer's coverage.
- COBRA from your employer, usually for a limited time.
- Retiree coverage from your former employer, if it covers spouses.
- A Marketplace (ACA) plan. Losing job-based coverage opens a special enrollment window, and they may qualify for premium tax credits.
- Medicaid, depending on income and state.
Timing your own Medicare
If you're still working and your spouse depends on your employer's plan, delaying your retirement or Part B may keep them covered. If you retire, line up their coverage to start the day yours ends.
Your record helps later
When your spouse turns 65, they can qualify for premium-free Part A on your work record if they don't have 40 quarters of their own.
Common questions
No. Each person qualifies on their own, usually at 65.
No. Medigap covers one person. Your spouse would need their own when they're on Medicare.
