Life insurance with asthma
For most applicants this is routine. Severity is what shifts it.
Asthma is common and, for most applicants, unremarkable to an underwriter. Well-controlled asthma managed with an inhaler is ordinary territory.
What changes the assessment is severity — particularly hospitalisations, oral steroid use, and whether you smoke.
What underwriters generally consider
- How severe it is and how often symptoms occur
- What medication you use and how frequently
- Whether you've needed oral steroids, and how often
- Any emergency room visits or hospitalisations, and when
- Whether you smoke or vape
- Age at diagnosis and whether it's childhood-onset
Smoking changes the picture substantially
The combination of asthma and tobacco or nicotine use is assessed considerably more closely than asthma alone. It's the single factor most likely to move an otherwise routine application.
Be accurate about nicotine use of any kind, including vaping — it shows in testing and in prescription history.
Hospitalisations are the other marker
Underwriters generally take note of emergency treatment and courses of oral steroids, since both indicate severity beyond day-to-day management. Having the approximate dates available saves follow-up questions.
What to have ready
- When you were diagnosed
- Current inhalers or other medication
- Approximate dates of any hospital or emergency treatment
- Whether you use any nicotine products
- Your treating physician's details
Common questions
For most applicants it's routine underwriting territory. Severity, hospitalisations, and nicotine use are what shift the assessment.
Disclose it with the context. Underwriters generally distinguish between a resolved childhood history and ongoing adult asthma, but they can only do that if you tell them.
Consistent management is generally read as a positive signal. Frequency of use and reliance on rescue medication are what indicate severity.
