Talking to your family about it

The awkward conversation that makes the policy actually work.

4 min read

A life insurance policy your family doesn't know about is a policy that may never get claimed. Insurers generally don't know a policyholder has died unless someone tells them.

The conversation is uncomfortable for about ninety seconds. Here's how to make it shorter than that.

Frame it as logistics, not mortality

You're not asking anyone to contemplate losing you. You're telling them where a document is, the same way you'd mention where the water shut-off valve is.

"I've set this up, here's where the details live, you'd need to call this number" is a complete conversation. It doesn't need to be more than that.

Tell them the three things that matter

Anyone who might need to make a claim needs to know:

  • That a policy exists at all
  • Which insurer it's with
  • Where the documents or policy number can be found

Say what it's meant to cover

Explaining the intent prevents arguments later. If the coverage is meant to clear the mortgage and keep the household running for a few years, say that out loud.

Beneficiaries can spend a payout however they like. Telling them what you had in mind is the only way that intent travels with the money.

Write it down somewhere findable

Memory under stress is unreliable. A single sheet with the insurer, the policy number, and a contact is worth more than a conversation everyone half-remembers.

Put it wherever your household already keeps important documents, and tell one person where that is.

If your family already knows all of this, you're ahead of most people. If they don't, it's a ten-minute fix that determines whether the policy does its job.
