Life insurance when you move abroad

Buy before you go if you can. Many insurers ask where you live.

US citizens who move abroad often find life insurance harder to buy once they've gone. Many US insurers ask where you live and where you'll travel, and some won't issue a new policy to someone living outside the US, or only for certain countries.

If you already have a policy

A policy that's already in force generally stays in force when you move, as long as you keep paying the premiums. Check the policy for any restrictions on residence or travel, update your mailing address and payment method, and make sure your beneficiaries can be reached.

If you're buying before you move

Apply while you're still living in the US, and tell the insurer about your plans honestly. An application that hides a planned move can cause problems at claim time. Some insurers are comfortable with some countries and not others.

If you've already moved

Options narrow but don't always disappear. Some US insurers will consider citizens living in certain countries. International life insurance, sold by insurers outside the US, is another route. Check how premiums, payouts and taxes work across the two countries.

Questions to ask

  • Does the policy restrict coverage based on where I live or travel?
  • Can I pay premiums from a foreign bank account?
  • Can my beneficiaries receive the payout outside the US?
  • What happens if I move back?

Common questions

  • Sometimes. Many US insurers limit new policies for people living outside the US, or only accept certain countries. It's easier to apply before you move.
