Life insurance for immigrants and non-citizens
Citizenship is generally not the requirement. Several other things are.
US citizenship is generally not required to buy life insurance here. Plenty of insurers write coverage for permanent residents and visa holders.
What insurers do assess is your immigration status, how long you've been in the country, and your ties to it — because those affect how they underwrite and service a policy running for decades.
What underwriters generally consider
- Your immigration status and visa category
- How long you've been in the US
- Whether you have a Social Security number or ITIN
- Your ties here — employment, property, family
- How long you intend to remain
- Travel to countries the insurer views as higher risk
Status matters more than citizenship
Permanent residents are generally underwritten close to citizens. Visa holders face more variation — some insurers write particular visa categories readily and others don't, and duration of stay in the US often matters.
Because carrier appetite varies so much here, applying blind to a single insurer is how people conclude coverage is unavailable when it isn't.
Practical documentation
- Passport and visa or permanent resident card
- Social Security number or ITIN
- Proof of US address
- Employment documentation
- Medical history, including care received abroad
Two things worth asking about
First, what happens if you leave the US — whether the policy remains in force and whether the death benefit is payable abroad. Terms differ.
Second, whether the insurer can pay a beneficiary who lives outside the US, and how. That's a practical question people don't think to ask and it matters enormously to the family.
Common questions
Generally no. Many insurers write coverage for permanent residents and visa holders. Status, time in the country, and ties here matter more than citizenship.
Usually, though the practicalities of paying a foreign beneficiary vary by insurer. Ask specifically — it matters a great deal to the family at claim time.
No. Carrier appetite varies substantially by visa category and time in the country. A decline from one says little about another.
