Why underwriting takes as long as it does

And the handful of things that genuinely speed it up.

4 min read

Nobody can promise you a decision date on a life insurance application, and anyone who does is guessing. Timelines depend on the product, the insurer, and mostly on whether anyone else has to send something.

What can be described honestly is what happens in between, and where it usually stalls.

The steps, roughly in order

  • Application submitted and reviewed for completeness
  • Database checks — prescription history, motor vehicle records, industry exchanges
  • Paramedical exam, if the product requires one
  • Medical records requested from your doctors, if needed
  • Underwriter review and a decision
  • Policy issued, delivered, and placed in force once accepted

Where it actually stalls

Almost always at the step involving a third party. Waiting on records from a physician's office is the single most common delay, and it's outside both your control and the insurer's.

The second most common is an incomplete or inconsistent application, which generates follow-up questions that add a round trip each time.

What genuinely speeds things up

  • Complete, accurate answers the first time
  • Having medication names, dosages, and doctors' details ready
  • Scheduling the exam promptly rather than at the far end of the window
  • Responding to requests quickly
  • Considering an accelerated underwriting product if you're in good health

Keep your existing coverage until it's in force

However long it takes, you are not covered by the new policy until it's issued and in force. Don't cancel anything before then.
