Getting a life insurance quote online
What the number means, and what can still change.
An online life insurance quote is an estimate based on what you tell it. It is not an offer, and it isn't binding on anyone until an application is underwritten and a policy is issued.
That's not a catch — it's how the product works. Knowing it up front keeps the process from feeling like a bait and switch when the final number differs.
What moves the number between quote and offer
Quotes assume a health class. Underwriting determines the actual one, and that's where most of the movement comes from.
- Your actual health class once underwriting is complete
- Prescription, motor vehicle, and industry database checks
- Height and weight relative to the insurer's guidelines
- Tobacco or nicotine use, including cessation timelines
- Family medical history
- Occupation and hobbies the insurer considers higher risk
Have these ready before you start
You'll get a more meaningful estimate — and a faster application — if you're not guessing.
- The coverage amount and term length you're aiming for
- An honest account of your health history and current medications
- Your current tobacco or nicotine status
- Who your beneficiaries will be
- Details of any coverage you already have, including through work
Comparing quotes fairly
Two quotes are only comparable if they describe the same thing. Before you decide one is cheaper, check that the face amount, term length, and assumed health class all match, and that riders are equivalent.
A quote assuming the best available health class will always look better than one assuming a standard class. That difference isn't a better deal — it's a different assumption.
How this works with us
We don't underwrite or issue policies. We take what you tell us, help you work out what you're actually trying to cover, and connect you with a licensed insurance professional who can quote and place it.
You get one person to deal with, and no wall of calls from numbers you don't recognise.
Common questions
No. A quote is an estimate based on the information provided. Actual rates and approval are determined by the insurer through underwriting.
Requesting a life insurance quote does not involve a hard credit inquiry. Insurers may use credit-based information in underwriting depending on the product and applicable rules.
It varies widely depending on the product and whether an exam or medical records are needed. Accelerated underwriting can be quick; a fully underwritten policy requiring records takes longer. No one can promise a specific timeline up front.
