The limits inside your limit
The overall number is rarely what binds. The category caps are.
Renters policies typically carry an overall limit on personal property, and then a set of much lower caps on specific categories inside it.
Those category caps are what actually decide most claims, and they are set well below what people assume from the headline figure.
Where sub-limits usually apply
The categories vary between insurers, but the pattern is consistent.
- Jewellery, watches and precious stones — often capped tightly for theft specifically
- Cash and precious metals, usually capped very low
- Electronics and computer equipment
- Bicycles and sports equipment
- Firearms, collectibles, art and instruments
- Anything used for business
Scheduling an item
Where an item exceeds its category cap, it can usually be scheduled — listed individually on the policy, generally with its own limit and often with no deductible.
Scheduling typically also broadens the perils covered. An unscheduled ring may be covered for theft but not for simply being lost; a scheduled one often is. This is the single most useful thing most renters can do to a policy, and it costs comparatively little.
Replacement cost or actual cash value
This setting decides what a claim is worth more than any other. Replacement cost pays what it costs to buy the item again today; actual cash value pays that less depreciation for age and wear.
On a five-year-old laptop or sofa the gap between the two is substantial. Check which basis your contents are written on rather than assuming.
| Term | Whole life | |
|---|---|---|
| A four-year-old laptop | Pays toward an equivalent new one | Pays what a four-year-old laptop is worth |
| Premium | Higher | Lower |
| When you notice | At the point of replacing it | At the point of replacing it |
How to set the overall limit
The usual advice is to inventory what you own, and the usual outcome is that nobody does it.
A workable substitute is to go room by room and ask what it would cost to replace the contents of that room from scratch. People consistently underestimate this, and the total is normally well above the default limit attached to a cheap quote.
Common questions
The overall limit and the category caps are different numbers. Jewellery is commonly capped well below the overall limit for theft specifically. Scheduling the item is the usual way to close that gap.
A photographic record and receipts for higher-value items make a claim substantially easier, and they are best gathered before you need them. Store the record somewhere that is not in the home.
