VA health care and Medicare

Two separate systems that don't pay for the same care.

Veterans enrolled in VA health care often wonder whether they need Medicare too. The two systems don't work together the way private insurance and Medicare do: the VA pays for care at VA facilities (and VA-authorized care), and Medicare pays for Medicare-covered care elsewhere.

They don't coordinate

Medicare can't pay for the same service the VA pays for, and Medicare doesn't pay for care you get at a VA facility. If you want to see a non-VA doctor or go to a non-VA hospital without VA authorization, you'd need Medicare to cover it.

Reasons veterans take Part B

  • Flexibility to get care outside the VA system, closer to home or in an emergency.
  • Protection if VA eligibility, funding priorities or your priority group change.
  • Avoiding the Part B late enrollment penalty: VA coverage doesn't let you delay Part B without one.

Drug coverage

VA drug coverage is creditable, so you can delay Part D without a penalty while you have it. If you take a Part D plan, it covers prescriptions filled outside the VA.

Common questions

  • No. VA coverage isn't based on current employment, so it doesn't protect you from the Part B late enrollment penalty.
