Medigap Plan N explained
Broad coverage, small copays, usually a lower premium than Plan G.
Plan N covers most of the same gaps as Plan G. In exchange for a typically lower premium, you pay small copays for some visits, and Plan N doesn't pay Part B excess charges.
What Plan N covers
- Part A coinsurance, hospital costs and 365 extra hospital days.
- The Part A deductible.
- Part B coinsurance, except copays of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that don't result in inpatient admission.
- First 3 pints of blood, hospice and skilled nursing facility coinsurance.
- 80% of foreign travel emergency care, up to plan limits.
What Plan N doesn't cover
- The Part B deductible ($283 in 2026).
- Part B excess charges from providers who don't accept assignment.
When Plan N works well
Plan N can suit people who see doctors a moderate amount and use providers who accept assignment. If you see specialists often, or live where many doctors don't accept assignment, the copays and excess charges can close the premium gap with Plan G.
Common questions
Up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that don't lead to admission.
Amounts, up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount, that providers who don't accept assignment can bill. Plan N doesn't pay them; Plans F and G do.
