The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan

The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan is an optional, free program every Part D plan must offer. Instead of paying for prescriptions at the pharmacy, you get a monthly bill from your plan for your drug costs, spread across the rest of the year.
How it works
- You opt in through your drug plan, before or during the year.
- At the pharmacy, you pay $0 for covered Part D drugs.
- Your plan bills you monthly, spreading your costs across the remaining months of the calendar year.
- It doesn't lower your total drug costs, and there's no interest or fee.
Who it can help
It helps most if you have high drug costs early in the year, for example if one expensive prescription would take you to the out-of-pocket cap in January. It generally isn't useful if your drug costs are low or even across the year, or if you get Extra Help.
Things to know
If you don't pay your bill, you can be removed from the payment plan, but you keep your drug coverage. Enrollment continues into the next year unless you opt out, depending on your plan's process.
