Medicare Advantage extra benefits
Extras can be useful. Read the limits before they drive your choice.
Many Medicare Advantage plans include benefits Original Medicare doesn't, such as some dental, vision or hearing coverage, or fitness programs. These supplemental benefits vary widely from plan to plan and year to year.
Because advertising often leads with them, it's worth understanding how they're usually limited before letting them decide which plan you choose.
How extras are usually limited
- Annual dollar maximums, for example on dental work.
- Limits on what's covered, such as preventive dental only.
- Separate networks or specific vendors you must use.
- Allowances that expire at the end of the year.
- Benefits that can be reduced or dropped next year.
Where to find the details
The plan's Evidence of Coverage and Summary of Benefits list every supplemental benefit, its limits and how to use it. Plans also must tell you each year about supplemental benefits you haven't used.
Keep the core coverage first
Your doctors, hospitals, drugs and out-of-pocket limit usually matter far more to your total costs than any extra. A plan with generous extras but a narrow network or a higher out-of-pocket limit can cost you more in a bad year.
Common questions
