Guaranteed issue vs simplified issue

The difference that matters isn't the questions. It's what the policy pays in year one.

These two get confused constantly, including by people selling them. Both skip the medical exam, which is where the similarity ends.

One difference matters more than all the others: what happens if you die in the first couple of years.

The core difference

  • Simplified issue — health questions asked, and answers can lead to decline; full death benefit typically payable from day one
  • Guaranteed issue — no health questions and acceptance within an age band; commonly carries a graded death benefit

What a graded death benefit means

On a graded policy, death from natural causes within an initial period typically returns the premiums paid — sometimes with interest — rather than the full face amount. Accidental death is usually covered in full from the start.

That's the trade for acceptance without questions, and it's the single most important thing to establish before signing. Ask directly: is the full death benefit payable from day one, and if not, what is paid and for how long?

Which to try first

Work down, not up. Try fully underwritten coverage first, then simplified issue, then guaranteed issue.

Each step down costs more per dollar of benefit and offers less, so guaranteed issue should be the answer when the alternatives have genuinely been ruled out — not the starting point because someone assumed your age or health closed the others.

When guaranteed issue is genuinely right

  • A serious current condition that rules out other underwriting
  • A recent diagnosis or hospitalisation that knocks out simplified issue
  • A modest final expense need where the graded period is an acceptable risk
  • Declines elsewhere, with a real need for some coverage

Questions for either

  • Is the full death benefit payable from day one?
  • If graded, what exactly is paid during the initial period and how long is it?
  • What is the maximum coverage available, and to what age is it issued?
  • Can the premium increase after issue?
  • How long is the free look period after delivery?

Common questions

  • Simplified issue asks health questions and can decline you, but typically pays the full benefit from day one. Guaranteed issue asks none and commonly carries a graded death benefit for an initial period.
