Free Medicare counseling in New Mexico
New Mexico’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is New Mexico Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC) - State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), Aging and Long-Term Services Department. Medigap if you’re under 65
New Mexico doesn't require insurers to sell Medigap to people under 65. The state high-risk pool offers a Medicare carve-out plan for people under 65 with Parts A and B.
Federal law only guarantees a Medigap Open Enrollment Period to people 65 and older, so state law decides what’s available before then. See Medicare under 65 on disability.
Switching Medigap plans: New Mexico's birthday rule
A New Mexico law taking effect January 1, 2027 will let Medigap policyholders 65 and older switch to a plan of equal or lesser value from any insurer, without health questions, during a window of at least 60 days starting in their birthday month.

Help paying Medicare costs in New Mexico
New Mexico’s Medicaid program (Turquoise Care (New Mexico Medicaid managed care, since 1 Jul 2024; replaced Centennial Care)) also runs the Medicare Savings Programs, which can pay your Part B premium and, for some people, deductibles and coinsurance. States may set limits higher than the federal minimums, so apply even if your income is a little over them. Qualifying for one also gets you Extra Help with drug costs automatically.

Medicare Advantage and Part D plans in New Mexico
Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are sold by county, so the plans, premiums and networks available in one part of New Mexico can differ from another. The Medicare Plan Finder lists every plan for your ZIP code. You can change plans during Medicare Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7.
