Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) plans
A high deductible, a yearly deposit, and no drug coverage.
A Medicare MSA plan is a type of Medicare Advantage plan with two parts: a high-deductible health plan and a bank account. Each year, the plan deposits money into your account, which you can use for health care costs before you meet the deductible.
How they work
- The plan deposits a set amount into your MSA account at the start of the year.
- You use the account for qualified medical expenses; unused money rolls over.
- After you meet the high deductible, the plan covers Medicare-covered services.
- You pay no plan premium, but you still pay the Part B premium.
What to know
- MSA plans don't include drug coverage. You'd join a separate Part D plan.
- They're available in limited areas.
- You can't make your own contributions to the account.
- Withdrawals for non-medical costs are taxed and may be penalized.
Common questions
They're similar but not the same. You can't contribute to an HSA once you have Medicare, and you can't add your own money to a Medicare MSA.
