How to check if your doctors take a Medicare Advantage plan
The directory is a start. The phone call is the check.
Network is the single biggest practical difference between Medicare Advantage plans. Before you join, confirm that the doctors, specialists, hospitals and pharmacies you rely on are in the plan's network, for the plan year you're joining.
Three ways to check
- The plan's online provider directory, searching for each doctor by name and location.
- The Medicare Plan Finder, which lets you check some providers and pharmacies.
- Calling each doctor's office and asking directly, which is the most reliable.
What to ask the office
- "Are you in network with [plan name, plan type] for next year?" Plan names can be similar, so give the exact plan.
- "Is the doctor accepting new patients with this plan?"
- "Which hospitals does the doctor admit to, and are they in network?"
- "Do you expect to stay in this plan's network?"
If the network changes
Plans can add or drop providers during the year. You should be notified if your doctor leaves. If the changes are significant, Medicare may give you a Special Enrollment Period to change plans. Some network changes can also give you a Medigap guaranteed issue right.
Common questions
Yes. Drug plans have pharmacy networks, and some pharmacies are preferred, with lower costs.
Many Medicare Advantage plans cover only emergency and urgent care outside their service area. Original Medicare works with any Medicare provider nationwide.
