Renewal is a re-rating, not a formality
It's also the one moment each year you're guaranteed to be paying attention.
At renewal your insurer re-offers coverage for another term, usually after re-checking the information that drives your rate.
Most people treat the notice as admin. It's actually the natural prompt for the annual review nobody otherwise does.
What the insurer re-checks
- Motor vehicle records, for auto policies
- Claims history, including claims you made
- Changes to the people or property covered
- Where permitted, credit-based insurance information
- Their own filed rates, which may have changed
Non-renewal is not cancellation
Cancellation ends a policy mid-term. Non-renewal means the insurer won't offer another term when this one ends.
Non-renewal gives you a window to arrange replacement coverage, and the notice periods are usually set by state law. Use that window — going past the end date creates a lapse, which is far more expensive.
Use the notice
- Compare the new premium against a fresh quote elsewhere
- Update mileage, drivers, vehicles, or property that has changed
- Ask about discounts you may now qualify for
- Check whether an old violation should have aged off
- Re-examine whether your limits still match your assets
Automatic renewal
Many policies renew automatically unless you act. Convenient, and also how people carry the same unreviewed policy for a decade. Convenience is not the same as it still being right.
Common questions
Cancellation ends a policy mid-term. Non-renewal means the insurer declines to offer a new term when the current one ends, usually with notice set by state law.
Either something about your file changed, or the insurer's filed rates did. A rise with a clean record is usually the latter — and a reason to compare.
No. You can switch, but make sure the new policy is in force before the old one ends. A gap between them is expensive.
