Quote My Policy

Your declarations page

If you only ever read one page of your policy, read this one.

The declarations page — usually just called the dec page — is the summary at the front of your policy. It lists who and what is covered, the limits, the deductibles, the term, and the premium.

It is the most useful document you own for comparing insurance, and most people have never looked at theirs.

What it lists

  • The named insured, and anyone else covered
  • What's insured — vehicles, property, or the life assured
  • Each coverage carried, with its limit
  • Deductibles for each applicable coverage
  • The policy period and policy number
  • The premium, and any discounts applied
  • Lienholders or mortgagees where relevant

Why comparison starts here

A quote is only comparable to what you already have if you know what you already have. The dec page is that, in one place.

Hand it to anyone quoting you and ask them to match it line for line. That single step prevents the most common comparison error — a cheaper quote that's cheaper because it covers less.

Check these on yours today

  • Is everyone who drives or lives there actually listed?
  • Are the vehicles or property current?
  • Is the address right, including where a vehicle is garaged?
  • Are the annual mileage figures still accurate?
  • Are the discounts you expect actually shown?
  • Are the limits what you thought they were?

It isn't the whole policy

The dec page summarises. Exclusions, definitions, and conditions live in the policy document behind it, and those decide edge cases.

Use the dec page for comparison and the full policy for understanding what happens when something goes wrong.

Common questions

  • It arrives with your policy documents and is usually available in your insurer's online portal or app. You can also request one at any time.
