Best Ways to Find an Independent Insurance Agent Online (2026)

Where to look, and how to check an agent is licensed before you share anything.

Facts checked September 23, 2026

An independent agent can quote more than one insurance company, which is the main reason people look for one. Finding a good one online usually means using a service or directory to get a shortlist, then checking the license yourself.

These are the routes we'd use, from the quickest to the most thorough. The last two aren't ways to find an agent so much as ways to check one, and you should use them whichever route you take.

How we picked

Leads to agents who compare

We favored routes that surface agents who can quote more than one insurance company.

Easy to use

A form, a chat or a search box, not a phone tree.

Lets you verify

Every route should end with you checking the license with the state.

The routes, ranked

  1. 1. Quote My Policy

Best for: Skipping the search and being connected directly

Instead of searching directories yourself, you tell Quote My Policy what you need and it connects you with licensed insurance professionals. It's a quick route when you'd rather not vet a list of agencies.

You fill in a short, three-step form or call, and choose how you'd like to be reached: phone, text or email. Quote My Policy connects you with licensed insurance professionals. It's not an insurance company and doesn't issue policies. Quotes are free and there's no obligation to buy.

When you submit a request, your details may be shared with licensed insurance professionals who may contact you about it. The privacy policy explains how.

  2. 2. Trusted Choice Agency Locator

Best for: Finding a local independent agency by chat

Trusted Choice is the consumer brand of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (the Big "I"). Its locator asks what you need and where you live, matches you with member agencies, and lets you pick one. Member agencies represent multiple insurance companies.

    • Covers personal, business, and life and health insurance
    • Its privacy policy says your details go to the independent agent you select

Visit Trusted Choice Agency Locator’s website

  3. 3. Big "I" state associations

Best for: Browsing member agencies in your state

Independent agencies join the Big "I" through their state association. Most state sites send consumers on to the Trusted Choice locator, but some run their own member search by name, city or ZIP code.

    • Find your state association on the IIABA's Find Your State page

Visit Big "I" state associations’s website

  4. 4. NAIFA's Find a Financial Professional

Best for: Life, disability and long-term care advice

A directory of members of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, hosted by the nonprofit Life Happens. It suits life and financial planning needs more than car or home insurance, and not every member is an independent agent.

    • Search by what you need and where you live
    • The directory says a listing is not an endorsement

    Visit NAIFA's Find a Financial Professional’s website

  5. 5. Insurers' own "find an agent" tools

Best for: When you already know which company you want

Most insurers that sell through agents have a ZIP code search on their website. It only lists agents appointed with that company, and many of them are captive agents who sell only that company's policies. Look for an independent agency in the results if you want to compare.

  6. 6. Your state insurance department's license lookup

Best for: Checking any agent before you share details

Every state licenses insurance agents and lets you look them up. The NAIC's state insurance departments page links to each state's department and agent search. Check that the agent or agency holds an active license for the type of insurance you're buying.

    • The NAIC page also explains how to file a complaint with your state

Find your state's lookup on the NAIC site

Captive, independent or broker?

A captive agent represents one insurance company. An independent agent is appointed with several and can compare them. A broker typically works on your behalf rather than an insurer's. Rules and titles vary by state. What matters is how many companies they can quote and how they're paid, so ask.
