Home insurance discounts
Most of them are applied because somebody asked.
Discounts are rarely volunteered and are frequently applied only when the insurer is told something it did not know — that an alarm was installed, that the roof was replaced, that a policy elsewhere could be bundled.
Nothing here is a promise: availability varies and none of it is worth buying cover you do not need in order to obtain. But the list is worth working through, because several of these apply to households that never claim them.
The two that usually matter most
Bundling home and auto with the same insurer is generally the largest single discount available in personal lines, and it frequently reduces the auto premium as much as the home one.
A recently replaced roof is the other. Roof age affects pricing, settlement basis and sometimes eligibility, so a replacement is worth telling the insurer about the moment it happens rather than at the next renewal.
Protection and prevention
These reduce either how likely a loss is or how bad it gets, which is exactly what an insurer is pricing.
- Monitored burglar and fire alarms, which are usually worth more than unmonitored ones
- Smoke detection, sprinklers and extinguishers
- Deadbolts, security doors and window locks
- Water leak detection and automatic shut-off devices, which insurers increasingly recognise
- Backup generators, and storm shutters or impact-resistant glazing where relevant
- Updated electrical, plumbing, heating and roofing, which affect rating even where no discount is named
Policy and household factors
These have nothing to do with the building and are frequently missed for that reason.
- Claims-free history, which builds quietly and is worth protecting when deciding on small claims
- Paying annually rather than monthly, which usually removes an instalment charge
- Paperless billing and automatic payment
- Loyalty with the same insurer, which is real but should be tested against the market rather than assumed
- New home, or newly built construction
- Non-smoking households, and some professional or affinity group memberships
Where the deductible fits
Raising the deductible reduces the premium and is not a discount — it is a transfer of risk to you, and it is worth treating differently from the list above.
It is a reasonable lever as far as you could comfortably fund the amount at short notice, and a poor one beyond that, because a deductible you cannot produce turns a covered loss into an uncovered one.
Where a separate percentage deductible applies to wind or hail, remember it moves with the dwelling limit rather than staying where you set it.
The conversation to have
Ask the insurer to list every discount available on the policy and confirm which are currently applied. That single question surfaces more than working through any list from the outside.
Then tell them what has changed since the policy was written — the roof, the alarm, the new heating, the fact that you now have an auto policy that could be bundled. Discounts are applied against what the insurer knows.
Do this at renewal each year. It takes a few minutes and it is the one moment when the premium is genuinely up for discussion.
Common questions
Bundling with an auto policy is usually the largest single one available, and it frequently reduces the auto premium as well as the home one.
Monitored systems commonly do more than unmonitored ones, because what an insurer is pricing is how quickly a loss is detected and stopped. Water leak detection is increasingly recognised for the same reason.
Only to an amount you could produce at short notice. It is a transfer of risk rather than a discount, and the saving stops being worth it at the point you could not fund the loss.
