Boat insurance in Texas
Gulf Coast, big lakes and hurricane season: plan coverage around all three.
Texas has a long coastline and many large lakes. Boat insurance can cover damage to your boat, theft, and your liability if you injure someone or damage property on the water.
Registration
Texas Parks and Wildlife requires registration for all motorized vessels regardless of length, non-motorized vessels 14 feet or longer, and documented vessels on Texas public water. Registration is valid for two years. Canoes, kayaks and other small non-motorized boats under 14 feet are exempt unless a motor is added.
TPWD's registration rules don't include proof of insurance, but marinas and lenders commonly require it.
Hurricane planning
If you keep a boat on the coast, ask how your policy handles named storms: whether it pays to haul out or move the boat, whether a separate named-storm deductible applies, and what your marina requires.
Common questions
Not if it's non-motorized. Adding a motor, even a trolling motor, means it must be registered.
