Rental reimbursement coverage

Cheap, and the limits matter more than the price.

Rental reimbursement pays toward a hire car while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered claim. It's usually one of the least expensive things on a policy.

What catches people out is not whether they have it, but the shape of the limits.

Two limits, and both bind

Coverage is typically written as an amount per day and a maximum in total — something like a daily figure with an overall cap.

Both can run out. A daily limit below local rental rates leaves you paying the difference every day, and a total cap can expire before a lengthy repair finishes. Parts delays make long repairs more common than people expect.

It only responds to a covered claim

Rental reimbursement follows a claim under your policy. If your car is in the shop for ordinary maintenance, or for damage you're not claiming for, it doesn't apply.

If another driver is at fault and their insurer accepts liability, their policy may cover your rental instead — in which case yours isn't needed for that claim.

Check what you'd actually need

  • Would your household manage with one fewer car for a week?
  • What do rentals actually cost where you live?
  • Do you need a specific size of vehicle?
  • Does your credit card already provide anything similar?
  • Would you hire a car at all, or use other transport?

The overlap worth checking

Some households carry rental reimbursement on the auto policy, hold a credit card with rental benefits, and belong to a motoring club. Those overlap, and the duplication is easy to miss precisely because each is small.

Common questions

  • Generally no. It responds to a covered claim under your policy, not to mechanical failure or routine maintenance.
