Car insurance for international students
No US driving history is the hurdle. The paperwork is what gets you over it.
International students can buy car insurance in the US, but insurers have little to go on: no US driving record, often no credit history, sometimes no Social Security number. Being prepared with the right documents makes the difference.
Your license comes first
Whether you can drive on your home country's license, and for how long, depends on the state you study in. Some states expect you to get a state license once you're a resident, and some have exchange agreements with certain countries. An International Driving Permit only translates your license; it isn't a license on its own.
Getting a US state license usually makes insurance easier to buy and less expensive.
What insurers may ask for
- Your passport, visa and I-20 or other status documents.
- Your home country license, and a US license if you have one.
- A Social Security number, or an ITIN, if you have one. Some insurers can quote without either.
- A driving record or letter of claims history from your home country insurer, if available in English.
Ways to keep the cost sensible
- Ask whether a good student discount applies to you.
- Choose an inexpensive, safe car to insure.
- Pick a deductible you could pay.
- Get a state license as soon as you're eligible.
- Compare several insurers, because they treat foreign driving experience differently.
Don't skip liability
If you cause an accident, you're personally responsible for costs above your limits. Liability above the state minimum, and uninsured motorist coverage, protect you most.
