Does your pet's cover travel with you?
Worth asking before the trip rather than at an unfamiliar clinic.
Most pet policies reimburse treatment from licensed vets, which usually means you can use a clinic away from home. "Usually" is doing some work in that sentence, and the details vary.
A five-minute call before you travel is worth a lot more than finding out at an emergency clinic.
What to ask your insurer
- Is treatment covered anywhere in the country, or only near home?
- What about outside the country, and for how long?
- Does an emergency or out-of-hours clinic change anything?
- Is pre-authorisation needed for anything while travelling?
- How do I claim for treatment paid abroad?
Take the paperwork with you
An unfamiliar clinic will ask questions your regular vet already knows the answers to. Having the basics on your phone makes a stressful visit far quicker.
- A copy of your pet's vaccination and medical history
- Your policy number and the insurer's claims line
- Your regular vet's contact details
- A note of any current medications and dosages
