Why the cheaper auto quote is usually cheaper

Five checks before you believe a price difference.

3 min read

Auto quotes are unusually easy to compare badly, because the coverage sits behind a single number and the differences aren't visible until a claim.

Five checks turn a price comparison into a real one.

The five checks

  • Liability limits — are the bodily injury and property damage limits identical?
  • Collision and comprehensive — both present, at the same deductibles?
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist — included in both?
  • Medical payments or personal injury protection — same in both?
  • Add-ons — is rental reimbursement or roadside in one and not the other?

Then check the inputs match

Two quotes can differ because they assume different things about you. Confirm both list the same drivers, the same vehicles, the same annual mileage, and the same garaging address.

A quote assuming 6,000 miles a year will beat one assuming 15,000, and that's an assumption rather than a deal.

What a genuinely better quote looks like

Same coverages, same limits, same deductibles, same inputs — different price. That happens, because insurers rate risk differently and your profile may simply suit one better.

That's the quote worth switching for. Everything else is a trade you should make knowingly, if at all.
