Insuring a salvage title vehicle

A salvage vehicle usually can't be legally driven — which shapes what's available.

A salvage title is issued when an insurer declares a vehicle a total loss. In most states a salvage-titled vehicle cannot be registered or legally driven on public roads until it has been repaired, inspected, and re-titled as rebuilt.

That distinction is the whole of this page, and it's why salvage and rebuilt are genuinely different situations rather than synonyms.

Salvage versus rebuilt

Salvage means totalled and not currently roadworthy. Rebuilt means it has since been repaired and passed a state inspection permitting registration again.

Insurance follows that distinction closely. Coverage for a vehicle that can't be driven looks completely different from coverage for one that can.

What coverage is usually available

For a salvage vehicle not being driven — awaiting repair, being parted out, or in storage — liability and collision generally don't apply because it isn't on the road.

Comprehensive-only or storage coverage may be available to protect against theft, fire, and weather while it sits. That's usually the realistic question rather than full coverage.

After repair, before driving

Once repaired, the vehicle generally needs a state inspection and a rebuilt title before it can be registered and insured for road use. The process and terminology vary by state.

Don't assume you can insure and drive it the moment repairs are finished — the paperwork sequence matters.

Buying one

Salvage vehicles sell cheaply for good reason. Before buying, confirm what it would take to make it registerable in your state, and confirm with an insurer that they would cover it once rebuilt.

Some insurers decline branded titles entirely. Finding that out after purchase is an expensive sequence.

Common questions

  • Full road coverage generally isn't available while it carries a salvage title, because it usually can't be legally driven. Comprehensive-only or storage coverage may be available while it sits.
