Insuring a car you're not driving

Cancelling looks like the obvious saving. It usually isn't.

A vehicle sitting unused — stored for a season, awaiting repair, or parked while you're away — still faces theft, fire, weather, and vandalism.

The instinct is to cancel the policy and save the premium. That's usually the more expensive choice, for reasons that have nothing to do with the car.

Why cancelling costs more than it saves

  • Many insurers rate on continuous coverage history — a gap raises your next premium
  • Most states require continuous insurance on a registered vehicle, with penalties for a lapse
  • A lender will require coverage regardless of whether you're driving
  • The vehicle remains exposed to theft, fire, and weather while it sits
  • Registration can be suspended in some states if coverage lapses

Comprehensive-only

The usual answer is to suspend liability and collision while keeping comprehensive. That covers theft, fire, weather, and vandalism while the car isn't moving, at a fraction of the full premium.

It also keeps your coverage history continuous, which is the part that pays off later.

The critical restriction

Under comprehensive-only the vehicle must not be driven. Not moved to the other side of the street, not taken for a short run to keep it healthy.

With liability suspended there is no coverage for harm you cause. Treat it as absolute, and restore full coverage before the car moves.

Before you store it

  • Ask your insurer what storage or comprehensive-only options exist
  • Check your state's rules on registration and continuous coverage
  • Tell any lender what you're doing
  • Confirm the storage location meets any policy requirement
  • Diarise restoring full coverage before you drive again

Common questions

  • You can, and it usually costs more overall. A gap in coverage history raises your next premium, most states require continuous insurance on a registered vehicle, and the car is still exposed to theft and weather.
