Life insurance and marijuana use

Guidelines have changed a lot. Carrier variation here is large.

Cannabis underwriting has moved considerably as legal status has changed across states. A number of insurers now assess use in ways that would have been unusual not long ago.

What hasn't changed is that you should answer the question accurately — and that carriers differ enough to make where you apply matter.

What underwriters generally consider

  • How often you use it
  • Method — smoked, edible, or another form
  • Whether it's medical or recreational
  • If medical, the underlying condition being treated
  • Whether it's combined with tobacco or nicotine
  • Any related history the insurer would assess anyway

The underlying condition can matter more

Where use is medical, underwriters generally look at what it's prescribed for. The condition being treated is frequently more relevant to the assessment than the cannabis itself.

That's worth knowing, because it means the conversation may be about something other than what you expected.

Smoking it can affect classification

Some carriers consider smoking cannabis alongside their tobacco or nicotine questions, and some do not. Method of use is therefore a question worth answering precisely rather than generally.

This is one of the clearest examples of guidelines differing between insurers.

Disclose it

Testing may detect use, and prescription records may show a medical authorisation. More to the point, an inaccurate answer is a material misrepresentation that can be investigated during the contestability period.

Legal status where you live doesn't change what the application asks or what the contract requires.

Common questions

  • It depends on the carrier and often on the method of use. Some consider smoked cannabis alongside nicotine questions; others assess it separately. Guidelines vary enough to be worth comparing.
