Windshield and glass claims

Often the one claim with its own, friendlier deductible.

Glass damage is usually a comprehensive claim, and many policies treat it more favourably than other comprehensive losses — with a reduced deductible, or none at all for repair rather than replacement.

Some states require insurers to offer full glass coverage. It's worth knowing what yours does before deciding whether to claim.

Repair versus replacement

A small chip can often be repaired rather than replaced. Repair is quicker, cheaper, and frequently carries a waived deductible because insurers prefer it to a full replacement.

Acting early matters: a chip that spreads into a crack usually can no longer be repaired.

Check these before claiming

  • Do you carry comprehensive? Glass usually falls under it
  • Is there a separate, lower glass deductible?
  • Is the deductible waived for repair rather than replacement?
  • Does your state require full glass coverage to be offered?
  • Would the repair cost less than your deductible anyway?

Modern windscreens are not just glass

Many vehicles have cameras and sensors mounted to the windscreen supporting driver assistance systems. Replacing the glass frequently requires recalibrating those systems.

That recalibration is a real cost and a real safety issue. Confirm it's included in the quote and that the shop is equipped to do it — a system left uncalibrated may behave incorrectly.

Be wary of the parking-lot pitch

Aggressive glass solicitation is a known problem in some areas — offers to handle a claim for you, sometimes with an inducement. Some of it is straightforward fraud, and the policyholder can end up implicated.

Deal with your insurer or a shop you chose, not with someone who approached you.

Common questions

  • Glass is usually comprehensive, and practices vary by insurer and state — some treat it more leniently than other claims. Ask your carrier directly.
