How a car insurance claim works
The steps in order, and where they usually go wrong.
An auto claim follows a fairly consistent path regardless of insurer: report, document, assess, repair or settle.
Most difficulties aren't about whether something was covered. They're about timing, documentation, and the conditions in your own policy.
The sequence
- Make sure everyone is safe, and get medical help if needed
- Document the scene before anything moves
- Report to your insurer promptly, even if unsure about claiming
- An adjuster reviews and assesses the damage
- The insurer determines coverage and value
- Repair or settlement, less your deductible
Report even if you're undecided
People delay while working out whether to claim. That delay can breach the notification condition in your policy, and injuries or damage sometimes surface days later.
Reporting an incident is not the same as filing a claim. Report it, preserve your options, then decide.
Choosing a repair shop
You can generally choose your own shop. Using one in the insurer's network often speeds up billing and may come with a workmanship guarantee, but it isn't compulsory.
If you have a shop you trust, say so. If you don't, the network is a reasonable default.
Keep your own record
- The claim number
- Names and dates for every conversation
- Copies of everything you send
- All estimates, including any you obtain independently
- Notes of what was agreed on each call
If you disagree
Ask for the decision in writing with the policy language relied on. Most policies also contain an appraisal provision for disputes about the amount of loss — worth asking about before escalating further.
Beyond that, your state insurance department handles complaints.
Common questions
It can, depending on fault, claim type, and insurer. That's fair to weigh for a small claim — but it isn't a reason to skip reporting the incident, which is a separate step.
Generally yes. Network shops often speed up billing and may carry a workmanship guarantee, but you're usually not required to use one.
Policies require prompt notice and the wording varies. Treat it as immediate rather than eventual — late notice is a common reason claims get complicated.
