Car insurance for military members
Deployment, PCS moves, and one federal protection worth knowing about.
Service creates insurance situations civilians don't have: deployments where the car sits unused, frequent moves across state lines, and vehicles left behind.
There's also a federal protection that applies specifically here.
The federal protection
The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act allows servicemembers to terminate certain contracts, including automobile insurance, in defined circumstances such as entering military service or receiving qualifying orders.
It also provides other protections around interest rates and legal proceedings. Requirements and procedures are specific — check the current position through a legal assistance office rather than acting on a summary.
Deploying: don't just cancel
Cancelling outright creates a coverage lapse, and lapses raise what you pay when you buy again — often for longer than the deployment lasted.
Better options generally exist.
- Comprehensive-only storage coverage, protecting against theft, fire and weather while the car isn't driven
- Reduced coverage rather than none
- A non-owner policy, if you'll drive occasionally
- Deployment discounts, which some insurers offer — ask
The garaging address
Where the vehicle is actually kept is a rating factor. If the car stays with family in another state while you're stationed elsewhere, tell the insurer and let them rate it correctly.
Getting this wrong in either direction causes problems: understating it is a misrepresentation, and overstating it costs you money.
PCS moves
- Required coverages differ by state — have the policy rewritten rather than assuming it travels
- Check registration and licence rules for your situation, which can differ for servicemembers maintaining legal residence elsewhere
- Update the garaging address at each move
- Never let coverage lapse between duty stations
- Check whether your insurer writes in the new state before you need them to
Other things to ask about
- Military and veteran discounts, which many insurers offer and few volunteer
- Whether coverage applies if the vehicle is shipped overseas
- Coverage while driving on base, and any base-specific requirements
- Whether a spouse remaining stateside should be the named insured
Common questions
Not outright — that creates a lapse that raises what you pay afterwards, often for longer than the deployment. Comprehensive-only storage coverage or reduced coverage generally costs less than the lapse would.

Required coverages differ, so have the policy rewritten rather than assuming it travels, update the garaging address, and confirm your insurer writes in the new state.
