Switching car insurance
You can switch mid-term. Just do it in the right order.
You don't have to wait for renewal. Auto policies can generally be cancelled at any time, with unused premium refunded on a pro-rata basis or subject to a short-rate calculation depending on the insurer and state.
The order matters more than the timing.
The correct order
- Get quotes, matching your current limits and deductibles exactly so the comparison is real
- Buy the new policy and set its start date
- Confirm the new policy is actually in force — not applied for, in force
- Only then cancel the old one, effective the same day the new one starts
- Get written confirmation of both the new policy and the cancellation
The mistake that costs most
Cancelling the old policy first. Even a one-day gap counts as a lapse, and the consequences of a lapse run far longer than the day.
Overlap by a day if you have to. Paying for one extra day of double coverage is trivially cheap compared with a break in continuous coverage history.
Comparing properly
Quotes are only comparable at identical limits, identical deductibles and identical optional coverages. A cheaper quote with lower liability limits or no uninsured motorist coverage is a different product, not a better price.
Use your declarations page as the specification when requesting quotes.
Also handle
- Your lender or lessor, who must be listed as loss payee on the new policy
- Automatic payments on the old policy, cancelled after the policy is
- Your refund from the old insurer, which should follow within a few weeks
- New ID cards in the vehicle and on your phone
- Any SR-22 or similar filing, which the new insurer must file
When switching isn't the answer
Before moving, ask your current insurer to review the policy. Discounts you now qualify for, a re-rate after a violation ages off, or adjusted coverage can close much of the gap without losing tenure benefits.
It's a short call and sometimes settles it.
Common questions
Generally yes. Policies can usually be cancelled at any time with unused premium refunded pro-rata or short-rate depending on insurer and state.
Buy the new policy, confirm it's actually in force, then cancel the old one effective the same day. Never cancel first — even a one-day gap counts as a lapse.
