Birds, rabbits and exotics

Coverage exists, from fewer places, on different terms. Horses are a separate market entirely.

Most pet insurance is written for cats and dogs. Coverage for rabbits, birds, reptiles and small mammals exists, from a smaller number of insurers and often with narrower terms.

Horses are not part of this market at all — equine insurance is its own specialism with its own products.

What's generally available

  • Rabbits and guinea pigs, covered by some mainstream pet insurers
  • Birds, generally through specialist exotic insurers
  • Reptiles and amphibians, from a small number of specialists
  • Small mammals such as ferrets, depending on the insurer and the state
  • Some species not covered at all, commonly including venomous or restricted animals

How the terms differ

Expect lower annual limits, narrower condition lists, and in some cases coverage written as mortality cover — paying the animal's value on death — rather than as veterinary cost reimbursement.

That distinction matters. Mortality cover doesn't pay a vet bill, and for many owners the vet bill is the whole reason for insuring.

Ask which model a policy uses before comparing anything else.

The vet availability problem

Exotic animals need vets with exotic experience, and there are fewer of them. Treatment often means travelling further and paying specialist rates.

Check whether a policy covers treatment at a specialist practice and whether specialist consultation fees are included, since they're higher than a general practice examination.

Horses are separate

Equine insurance is its own market with its own product set — mortality cover, major medical and surgical cover, and in some cases loss of use.

It's underwritten differently, priced differently, and generally arranged through equine specialists rather than pet insurers. If you're insuring a horse, start there rather than with a pet insurance comparison.

What to ask

  • Is my species covered, by name?
  • Is this veterinary cost cover, mortality cover, or both?
  • What's the annual limit, and are there per-condition limits?
  • Are specialist consultation fees covered?
  • Are hereditary and congenital conditions covered?
  • Are there age limits at enrolment for this species?

Common questions

  • Often yes — rabbits through some mainstream pet insurers, birds and reptiles generally through exotic specialists. Terms are narrower and limits lower than for cats and dogs.
