Alternative and complementary therapies

Covered by more plans than people expect, usually with a vet's referral attached.

Rehabilitation and complementary therapies are increasingly used in veterinary medicine, particularly after orthopaedic surgery and for chronic pain.

A reasonable number of plans cover them, and almost all attach conditions.

What's commonly included where covered

  • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Chiropractic treatment
  • Laser therapy
  • Hip and joint supplements, on a minority of plans

The usual conditions

  • Referral or prescription by a veterinarian
  • Treatment of a condition otherwise covered by the policy
  • Delivery by a qualified practitioner, sometimes with specified credentials
  • A separate annual sub-limit for complementary therapies
  • Availability only on higher plan tiers

Where it matters most

Post-surgical rehabilitation, particularly after cruciate or other orthopaedic repair, is where these therapies do the most work — and where a course of treatment can run for months.

If your pet is facing orthopaedic surgery, checking rehabilitation coverage is worth doing before the surgery rather than after.

How to check properly

Ask for the specific list of therapies covered and the conditions attached, in writing. "Complementary therapies covered" on a summary page is not the same as a defined list.

Also ask whether there's a separate sub-limit, because a generous annual limit doesn't help if therapy is capped separately.

Be realistic about evidence

These therapies vary in how well supported they are. Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy for post-surgical rehabilitation have a stronger evidence base than some others.

Follow your vet's advice on what's appropriate for your animal. Insurance coverage is not a statement about clinical value, in either direction.

Common questions

  • A reasonable number of plans do, usually requiring veterinary referral, for a condition otherwise covered, delivered by a qualified practitioner, and often subject to a separate sub-limit.
