Life insurance for remote workers
Mostly unremarkable to an underwriter. Three things aren't.
Working remotely doesn't meaningfully change how life insurance is underwritten. Occupation matters for hazard, and a desk job is a desk job wherever the desk is.
Three practical things do come up, and they're worth being straight about on an application.
One: where you actually live
Policies are issued based on your state of residence, and applications ask for it. If you've moved and not updated anything, or you split time between states, answer accurately.
This matters more than people assume, because policy provisions and consumer protections are set at state level.
Two: extended time abroad
Working remotely from another country for extended periods is a foreign travel and residence question, and insurers ask about it. Occasional trips are unremarkable; spending months abroad is not.
Disclose the actual pattern rather than the technical answer about where your employer is.
Three: employer coverage is still tied to the job
Remote workers often feel less connected to an employer and more likely to change roles. Group life ends when the job does, and conversion windows are short.
An individual policy you own isn't affected by a job change, which is a stronger argument for remote workers than for most.
One genuine advantage
If remote work cut your commute substantially, your driving exposure fell — and motor vehicle records feed into life underwriting as well as auto. It's a small factor, but it's a real one moving in your favour.
Common questions
Very little. Occupation matters for hazard, and desk work is assessed the same wherever it's done. Residence and extended time abroad are the questions that do come up.
Disclose it. Extended time abroad is a foreign residence question insurers assess, and the actual pattern matters more than where your employer is based.
