Waiting periods, and why there's usually more than one
A single policy often has several, applying to different things.
A waiting period is time between coverage starting and a particular benefit becoming available. It exists to prevent people buying a policy for a loss they already know about.
The mistake is assuming a policy has one waiting period. Most have several, and they apply to different things.
Where they show up
- Pet insurance — commonly different periods for accidents, illnesses, and named conditions such as joint issues
- Guaranteed issue life — an initial period during which death from natural causes typically returns premiums rather than the full benefit
- Some final expense policies with graded benefits
- Certain riders, which may not start when the base policy does
The pet insurance case
This causes the most disappointment. An accident waiting period may be short while an illness period is longer, and specific conditions can have a longer one still.
A pet diagnosed during a waiting period is generally treated as pre-existing afterwards — so the timing doesn't just delay coverage, it can exclude the condition permanently.
The guaranteed issue case
Guaranteed issue policies accept applicants without health questions, and manage that with an initial period. Death from natural causes during it typically returns premiums, often with interest, rather than paying the face amount. Accidental death is usually covered from the start.
This is the single most misunderstood feature of that product, and it's worth confirming the exact terms before buying.
Questions to ask
- How many waiting periods does this policy have?
- What is the period for each type of claim?
- What is paid if something happens during one?
- Does anything diagnosed during a waiting period become excluded afterwards?
- Do waiting periods restart if I change plans or lapse?
Common questions

Usually not. Pet policies commonly have different periods for accidents, illnesses, and specific conditions.
It depends on the policy. Some pay nothing for that claim; guaranteed issue life typically returns premiums for natural causes. Confirm the specific terms.
