What your premium is really made of

It moves for reasons that frequently have nothing to do with you.

The premium is what you pay for coverage. What's less obvious is that it's built from two quite different things: an assessment of you, and an assessment of everyone like you.

That's why a renewal can rise after a blameless year.

The two halves

  • Your own factors — record, claims, coverage chosen, deductibles, location
  • The insurer's filed rates, which apply across a whole book of business

Why it rises when nothing changed

Insurers file rate changes with state regulators, driven by repair costs, claim severity, and regional loss experience. When those are approved they apply to everyone in the affected group.

So a clean year doesn't guarantee a flat renewal. It also means an increase isn't necessarily an error — but it is a prompt to compare, since carriers file at different times and to different degrees.

What you actually control

  • The coverages and limits you choose
  • Your deductibles
  • Discounts you claim — most are applied on request
  • The accuracy of your details, especially mileage and address
  • Whether you pay in full or in installments, where fees apply
  • Whether you shop at renewal

Premium is not the same as cost

The cheapest premium is not the lowest cost if it comes with lower limits, higher deductibles, or missing coverages. Comparing premiums across policies that differ is comparing nothing.

Common questions

  • Insurers file rate changes that apply across a book of business, driven by repair costs and claims experience generally. It may be unrelated to your record — which is also why comparing elsewhere is worthwhile.
